There is a neighbourhood in Barcelona where every street corner is a surprise, every façade tells a story, and every building seems to compete with its neighbour for sheer audacity of imagination. Welcome to the Eixample — and welcome to one of the most extraordinary concentrations of Art Nouveau architecture anywhere in the world.
Our private Barcelona Art Nouveau and Gaudí Tour takes you deep into this remarkable district, where the golden age of Catalan Modernisme left its most spectacular mark.
The Vision Behind the City
Before we admire the buildings, we need to understand the stage on which they were built. The broad, elegant streets of the Golden Square did not happen by accident. They are the work of urban visionary Ildefons Cerdà, whose revolutionary grid plan for Barcelona's expansion in the 19th century was — and remains — one of the most ambitious feats of city planning in European history.
On this tour we explore Cerdà's ideas, his innovations, and the fascinating tension between his rational, egalitarian vision and the flamboyant, rule-breaking architecture that his perfectly ordered grid ended up hosting.
The Architects Who Changed Everything
The Eixample became the canvas for a generation of architects who wanted to break free from the conventions of their time. On this tour we focus on the three towering figures of Catalan Modernisme:
Antoni Gaudí i Cornet — the undisputed genius of the movement, whose work transcends any label or category. Organic, spiritual, breathtakingly original, his buildings in the Eixample are among the most visited in the world — and yet most visitors only scratch the surface of what they are seeing. We go deeper.
Lluís Domènech i Montaner — arguably the most technically accomplished of the Modernista architects, whose buildings combine structural daring with an extraordinary richness of decorative detail. His work deserves to be far better known than it is.
Josep Puig i Cadafalch — a polymath who was architect, archaeologist, art historian and politician all at once. His buildings in the Golden Square are among the most playful and inventive in the entire neighbourhood.
A Neighbourhood Full of Precious Gems
The Golden Square is not just about the famous landmarks. On this tour we seek out the hidden details — the ironwork, the ceramic tiles, the sculpted façades, the unexpected flourishes tucked away in corners that most people walk past without a second glance. This neighbourhood rewards those who look closely, and on this tour, we make sure you do.
